Spanish military commanders in the Caribbean who monitored the actions of the indigenous people
Repartimiento
A plot of land that came with a number of indigenous people which were given to the Spanish settlers. These later became forms of mini-encomiendas.
Encomienda System
A system of labour where Spanish settlers received grants of land from their king with the rights to enslave and Christianise the indigenous people.
When the Spanish came to the Americas in the late 15th century, they were seeking gold, goods and god.
The enslavement of the Tainos began with the arrival of Christopher Columbus and his men who arrived in Jamaica on a quest for gold.
The Encomienda System was introduced for the following economic reasons: The Spaniards needed a source of labour in order to exploit the natural resources they found in the New World. Labour was needed to cultivate the land and work the mines.
The Spanish government felt that this system would facilitate the conversion of the natives to Christianity.
How the Encomienda System worked
The Tainos were required to pay tributes of gold. If there was no gold, Tainos were to bring tribute in cotton. Those who did not meet these demands were punished by death.
Effects of the Encomienda System included killing, exploitation, depression and grief. Tainos died from diseases brought by the Spaniards and some escaped into the mountains.
About 60 years after the Spaniards' arrival, the entire Taino population was wiped out because of death due to malnutrition, disease, overwork, suicide and murder.
Protests from Hispanola, led to the abolishing of the encomienda system and the Laws of Burgos (1512-13) were put into place to slow down the enslavement of the Tainos.
Christopher Columbus was trying to find a shorter route to Asia (China, Japan, India).
Columbus thought that Japan and the Indies were much closer than they actually were.
Columbus was looking for wealth and spices.
Columbus eventually got support from Ferdinand and Isabella, the King and Queen of Spain. On August 3, he set sail from Palos, Spain with 3 ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.
When Columbus landed in the Bahamas, he thought he had landed on the islands near India. This is why he called the indigenous people "Indians".
Columbus's voyages were the first major steps towards European colonization of the Americas.
