• religion does not always prevent social change by creating false class conciousness
• plenty of examples where oppressed groups have used religion to attempt to bring about social change
• religion still exists in communist communities: religious beliefs remained stronger in 20th century Russia than in the capitalist west
• just because religion can be used as a tool of oppression does not explain its existence
