Calvinism

• Calvinism played a key role in the development of capitalism
• calvinism preached the doctrine of predestination: god had already decided whether you are going to heaven or hell before you were born
• Calvinism taught that the way to figure out whether you were saved or damned was to work hard and spend less time idling and engaging in unproductive activities the more likely that you were going to heaven.
• over decades the Calvinist work ethic encouraged individuals and communities to set up businesses and invest any money they earnt in growing the businesses which laid foundations for capitalism
