  • STRENGTH
    • the use and objective and scientific method with high control due to the use a lab study- standardised and repeated to increase reliability of results
    • This Is highlighted by the emergence of cognitive neuroscience, enhancing scientific basis of approach as biology and psychology are brought together- establish psychology as a science.
    • However, studies rely on inferences of internal mental processes- subjective and can reduce the validity of findings. Additionally, high control+artificial stimuli means some cognitive studies lack mundane realism-lacks eco and external val.
  • LIMITATION
    • based on machine reductionism, where human functions are a result of units of activity.
    • For example, approach ignores major influence of emotions and feelings on the cognitive system e.g., major effects of anxiety as seen by EWT
    • breakdown of large concepts into simplified components weakens the validity of approach as it is not a fully comprehensive explanation.
    • However, reductionist approach allows for the scientific testing of operationalised variables, producing clear cause and effect relationships.
  • strength
    • most applicable approach to the real world due to its application to many theories. For example, cog approach has made important contributions to AI which will revolutionise the future. In addition, cognitive approach has been used to explain and treat certain mental conditions e.g. through cognitive behavioural therapy.
    • improves credibility of approach due to its widespread application. Furthermore, treatments gained from cog approach has allowed improved quality of life for individuals, return to work, pay taxes, positively benefit economy.
