eng lit blood brothers quotes

Cards (4)

  • “will you be my bestfriend?” - edward
we learn edward is naïve and innocent , he is desperate to be around someone other than his mother who has been isolating him from the outside world , he has only just met mickey but wants to be his bestfriend showing his desperation , may also show the power of nature and the brotherly bond that is drawing them together , edward is comfortable with the working class environment (emphasises innocence) as he possibly sees mickey as a rolemodel
  • “draw the dole live like a bohemian” - edward
shows little character development as he grows older , his middle class life means he has not experienced the cruelty of the world - naïve - contrasting mickey , since he has been separated from mickey, eddies middle class environment has overpowered his working class one, causing a lack of empathy and emphasises the power of nurture , a parallel is seen when eddie offers mickey money to when mrs L offers money to mrs J, both of them having the money thrown back at them
  • “then marry me” - edward
shows eddies negative character development as he has become more like his mother at the end of the play , here he is revealing his love to linda whereas earlier he was the one encouraging mickey to ask her out , eddie is becoming more sly and manipulative like his mother , possibly sees himself as better than mickey due to his status , he later exploits his high role to get close to linda and eventually have an affair with her , going against the blood brother pact which is similar to when Mrs L broke the agreement with Mrs J by not letting her see her son
  • “did you never hear how the johnstone died?“ - narrator
Happens at the very start of the play, instantly revealing the theme of inescapable fate as well as foreboding a tragedy. Also, significantly the narrator says this establishing his character to be omniscient as well as revealing his presence forebodes something bad. The entire narrative arc is revealed in this simple introduction, which builds the whole play on mystery. Also, allows the set up of dramatic irony throughout as the audience know the fate of the main two characters, and they become witnesses to their downfall.
