Multi-Store Memory Model (MSM)

Subdecks (1)

Cards (13)

  • Multi store Memory model ( MSM ): a linear model of how memory is stored
    • Sensory memory ( SM )
    • Short term memory ( STM )
    • Long term memory ( LTM )
  • Sensory memory: A temporary store of information that is available for processing by the sensory register ( senses )
  • The senses are coded into different registers:
    • Iconic - visual
    • Echoic - auditory
    • Gustatory - taste
    • Olfactory - smell
    • Haptic - touch
  • Sensory Memory:
    • storeage - 5 senses
    • duration - >half a second
    • capacity - very large (Sperling)
  • Short term memory (STM): a temporary store that holds 7+/-2 information and stores them in the hippocampus acoustically (verbally)
  • Long Term memory (LTM): a store potentially lasting forever, in which, information is stored in the frontal cortex semantically (with meaning)
  • Short term memory (STM):
    • Storage - acoustically and visually. (Baddeley List B)
    • Duration - 18 - 30 seconds (Peterson^2)
    • Capacity - 7+/-2 (Miller)
  • Long term Memory (LTM):
    • Storage - semantically (Baddeley List D)
    • Duration - potentially forever ( Bahrick)
    • Capacity - infinite
