• Steve Bruce: true for pre modern christian societies but since the increase in religious pluralism the definition no longer applies
• there are several examples of churches that do not fit the above definition
• the Church of England does not have universal membership
• many churches do not claim a monopoly on the truth and are tolerant of other religions
• links between church and state have weakened
• the only way modern churches meet the definition is by structure
