  • Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) -
    • federally controlled (state governments had no say) - southern states weren't doing enough for the poor, TVA was set up across 7 states helping them recover - part of the new deal was to redevelop the Tennessee valley to create jobs and reduce the effects of the dust bowl
    • it revived the economy by producing electricity - 20 dams were built, creating jobs and allowing flooding to be controlled for farmers. - it generated hydro-electricity for local farms which boosted productivity
  • policies for agriculture -
    Roosevelt stopped over-production to increase prices - the agriculture adjustment administration (AAA)
    AAA - paid farmers to keep areas of land empty and limit the number of crops/animals held
    6 million pigs were killed and bc there was less wheat/cotton grown, prices rose - helping farmers to make a profit

    farmers were helped if they struggled with their mortgages - the farm credit administration (FCA) improved mortgage arrangements for 20% of farmers - more could now pay their mortgages so were more likely to keep their land and jobs, this made sure the number of farmers didn't decrease

    businesses were encouraged to join the national recovery administration (NRA) - they were popular amongst the public as it controlled prices, wages and working hours. - 2.3 million businesses took part, displaying the blue eagle symbol to show they were part of it, this helped to improve working conditions for workers across America

    workers could join unions - the national industrial recovery act (NIRA) allowed workers to join unions (3.9 million were in a union by 1939) - they could fight for better pay/conditions/hours helping them to earn more and improve the economy.

    the federal emergency relief act (FERA) - have $500 million to states to help the unemployed - this allowed the unemployed to feed their family in the short time while looking for a job

    people were encouraged to return to work - Roosevelt set up the civilian conservation corps (CCC) which gave young men outdoor paid jobs, 500,000 had joined it by 1935.
