Cards (2)

  • CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
made up of the brain and spinal cord. the brain is central to maintaining life and has many functions including language production, motor coordination and basic functions such as regulating body temperature. the spinal cord ensures messages from the brain are transmitted to the rest of the body via the pns. they are also involved in reflex actions such as if we get startled.
  • PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
transmits messages from the brain to the rest of the body, and also relays messages back up to the brain. split into two sections: somatic nervous system and autonomic. somatic nervous system transmits and receives messages from the senses, autonomic nervous system transmits and receives messages from organs. autonomic is split into sympathetic ns which involved in increasing energy levels for responses such as fight or flight, while parasympathetic ns conserves and decreased energy/activity levels in the body.
