TISSUE ADHESIVE PREPARATION

Cards (9)

  • Tissue adhesive
A solution or mixture used to help tissues adhere to glass slides during staining
  • Tissue adhesives
    • Not necessary for routine staining
    • Not mandatory in histopathology department
    • Can be essential for routine staining when tissues are fragile and exposed to extreme pH
  • Applying tissue adhesive
    1. Spread thinly and evenly on a clean, grease-free slide
    2. Can use fingers, clean foam/rubber sponge, or another slide to spread
  • Mayer's egg albumin
The most commonly used tissue adhesive in the laboratory
  • Making Mayer's egg albumin
Separate egg yolk and white, add 50ml egg white to 50ml glycerin, filter, add 100mg thymol crystals
  • Excess albumin takes up acidic stain, so excess should always be wiped from the slide periphery
  • Glycerin is added to prevent drying and cracking of tissue sections
  • Thymol is added to prevent mold growth
  • Equipment and materials for making Mayer's egg albumin
    • Filter paper
    • Funnel
    • Stirring rod
    • Thymol
    • Glycerin
    • Egg white
