Tissue adhesive
A solution or mixture used to help tissues adhere to glass slides during staining
Tissue adhesives
Not necessary for routine
staining
Not mandatory in
histopathology
department
Can be essential for routine staining when tissues are fragile and exposed to extreme
pH
Applying tissue adhesive
1. Spread
thinly
and evenly on a clean,
grease-free
slide
2. Can use fingers,
clean
foam/rubber sponge, or another
slide
to spread
Mayer's egg albumin
The most commonly used tissue adhesive in the laboratory
Making
Mayer's
egg
albumin
Separate egg
yolk
and white, add
50ml
egg white to
50ml
glycerin,
filter, add 100mg thymol crystals
Excess albumin takes up
acidic
stain, so excess should always be wiped from the
slide periphery
Glycerin
is added to prevent
drying
and cracking of tissue sections
Thymol
is added to prevent
mold growth
