localisation of function in brain

Cards (8)

  • diff areas of brain are responsible for specific behaviours, processes or activities.
  • hemispheres
-contralateral- right hemisphere controls persons left side vice versa
    -hemispheres connected by corpus collosum
-outside layer of hemispheres is called cortex which is subdivided into lobes
  • lobes and functions
frontal- higher level thinking, speech, motor control
    parietal-receive and interpret sensory info
occipital- receive and process visual info
temporal- process auditory info and important in memory
  • somatosensory area

    -at front of parietal lobes
-where sensory info from skin is represented
    -processes touch,pain,heat and pressure
  • occipital lobe
    -back of brain
    -visual cortex
-contains diff parts that process diff type of info including colour, shape or movement
-the eyes send info from right visual field to left visual cortex vice versa
-damage to the left hemisphere can result in blindness in the right visual field of each eye
  • motor area

-controls voluntary movement in opposite sides of body
  • language centres
    -left hemisphere
-brocas area - speech production - if damaged (brocas aphasia), speech is slow and lacks fluency, able to read and have fine comprehension but limited writing ability
-wernickes area - language comprehension - if damaged, (wernickes aphasia), produce nonsense words when speaking, severe difficulties understanding speech
  • study
    phineas gage
