  • 'see the mountains kiss high heaven' personifies nature to show its power and the use of affection between natural elements is used to convince the reader that physical love is natural and beautiful.
  • 'why not i with thine?' - rhetorical question shows that the speaker is experiencing unrequited love and the monosyllabic nature of this line makes the end of the stanza more persuasive and suggest that this outcome would be straight forward.
  • 'if thou kiss not me' - poem ends with a question to show that the speaker is yet to discover an answer for why this is true. kiss repetition emphasises speakers desire to be loved.
