  • Provides a greater understanding of cortical specialisation, eg Broca and Wernicke both relied on post-mortem studies.
  • Obtaining a person's brain can be very difficult - patients may not have been given informed consent.
  • Causation - not sure if unrelated issues cause structure changes.
  • Invasive method unlike any other method
  • Difficult to do compared to EEG
  • This method of investigation has successfully contributed to the understanding of many disorders. Iverson examined the brains of deceased schizophrenic patients and found that they all had a higher concentration of dopamine, especially in the limbic system, compared to non-schizophrenic brains highlighting the importance of such investigations.
  • Post-mortem studies were used to link HM's memory deficits to damage in his brain, so they can provide useful information.
