  • 'like a hare' 'as shy as a leveret' - speaker acknowledges her fear of him and all men. uses similies to compare her to young vulnerable animals. she represents the freedom of nature compared to the structure of society.
  • 'we chased her' show male control over females in society as he sees her as something he owns and protects. he doesnt question why she runs. also she is not given a name which further emphasises how he sees her as an object.
  • 'turned the key on her, fast' - the key is symbolic of how he desires power and control over her. the caesura makes it sound final and shows intent to do it again. it also demonstrates that he has acknowledges that she wants to escape so prevents this by locking her in.
