Inspector Goole

• "You were annoyed with yourself and you passed the annoyance onto her" - Directed to Sheila for being envious and insecure because of Eva

  • Repetition of "you" - Inspector is very direct, Priestley uses Inspector as a figure who exposes the selfishness of Edwardian society and exposes the Birling family.
• "Public men, Mr Birling, have responsibilities as well as privileges"

  • Goole has the biggest issue and is more accusative with Mr Birling given that he's the most powerful and the eldest
  • "Public" - adjective used, Goole implies that Mr Birling's high position makes him responsible for the lower classes
  • "responsibilities", "privileges" - abstract nouns, Goole says that Birling should use his privilege to give back to society
• "You're offering money at the wrong time Mr Birling"

  • "offering", "wrong" - Mr B tries to bribe Goole into protecting his family's social image, so Goole sarcastically says this implying that Mr B could've given this money to Eva who needed it the most
• "There are millions [...] of Eva Smiths and John Smiths [...] all intertwined with our lives" - Goole's social critique

  • plural of "Smiths" - a metaphor for the working class as Smith is a common name
  • "millions" - hyperbole, ALL social classes are connected and are reliant on each other
• "if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught in fire and blood and anguish"
