  • 'I don't think you ought to talk business on an occasion like this.' -  shows that Mrs Birling has power over the family as while she is inferior to her husband she is of a higher class than him and head of the family
  • "Well it's my duty to keep labour costs down." - Shows Mr Birling doesn't get questioned because he is normally in power but is offended by the Inspector asking him as his decisions in power are questioned because they aren't right
  • "you'll never be in a position to let anybody stay or to tell anybody to go." - Mr birling uses his position as head of the family to control eric and the situation
  • "I told him that if they didn't get rid of that girl, I'd never go near the place again and I'd persuade mother to close our account with them." - Sheila uses her families status and power to get eva fired from her job
  • ":And so you used the power you had, as a daughter of a good customer and also of a man well known in the town, to punish the girl just because she made you feel like that?" - Show the Inspector telling the Birlings that there power has alot of influence on others and they can ruin there life
  • "-now she's obviously had about as much as she can stand. You heard her." - Gerald uses his power over Sheila because hes a man to try and control Sheila and make her leave the room
  • "you're looking tired, dear. I think you ought to go to bed - and forget about this absurd business. You'll feel better in the morning." - Mrs Birling as Sheilas mother uses her power as head of the family to try and control Sheila to get away from the unsuitable business for a young lady to be hearing about
  • "well, I was in that state when a chap easily turns nasty - and I threatened to make a row." - Eric uses his power and force his way onto Eva.
