• 'the waterlogged earth gulping for breath at our feet' - collective pronoun shows hope that they will resolve their conflict in the future. waterlogged shows that they cannot take anymore arguments and feel it should stop. personification shows how their relationship is just like nature. gulping has connotations of a drowning person that needs saving.
• 'like a pair of wings settling after flight' - pair shows unity between. flight shows the long journey symbolically it has taken for them to be together. similie shows the calmer atmosphere but flying is often common for birds that shows it may happen again. also flight sounds similar to fight which portrays them as connected - cant fight forever as nature will stop you.
• 'tipping in unison' - nature is reflective of how humans should be , communication is necessary for resolving problems. also the fact they are half under water shows their problems still exist due to the water symbol they just manage to resolve them by coming out of the water together and remaining on top of it.
