Arterial supply

• Circle of Wllis provides collateral blood flow
• Blood flow can be redirected to alternate pathways if injury occurs
• Forebrain is supplied by internal carotid artery
• Occipital is supplied by verterbral artery
• Brainstem is supplied by vertebral artery
• Cerebellar is supplied by vertebral artery
• Posterior cerebral artery supplies the occipital lobe and visual cortex
• Damage to posterior cerebral artery can cause blindness and dyslexia
• Middle cerebral artery supplies the motor cortex of the upper limb
• Middle cerebral artery supplies the sensory cortex of the upper limb
• Middle cerebral artery supplies the caudate, putamen and globus pallidus
• Damage to middle cerebral artery can lead to face and arm weakness + difficulty understanding language
• Damage to globus pallidus can lead to weakness of 1 side of the body
• The anterior cerebral artery supplies the motor cortex of the lower limb
• The anterior cerebral artery supplies the sensory cortex of the lower limb
• The Middle cerebral artery supplies brocas and wernicks areas
• The anterior cerebral artery supplies the preforntal cortex
• Damage to the anterior cerebral artery can lead to leg weakness and sensory loss
