  • Function of the endocrine system:
    • Provides a chemical system of communication within the blood stream to regulate the activity of cells and organs in the body
    • Slower than the nervous system but its effects are more widespread and powerful
    • Chemical messengers are hormones, these are released by the glands to regulate bodily functions
  • Gland - Organ that releases hormones that regulate functions in the body
  • Pineal gland - Melatonin: Regulating the sleep-wake cycle
  • Adrenal gland - Adrenaline: Fight or flight response
  • Pituitary gland (master gland) - Many different hormones, e.g. oestrogen: Many effects depending on hormone released
  • Ovaries - Oestrogen and progesterone: Regulate the menstrual cycle
  • Testes - Testosterone: Male characteristics and production of sperm
