    • I was angry with my friend
      I was angry with my foe
      Juxtaposition- friend and foe are completely opposing ideas this emphasis's how he is angry at everything and everyone
      Personal pronoun shows how his anger is personal and the repetition makes it seem as if it is still growing
    • And I water'd it in fears
      Night and morning with my tears

      Metaphor- shows that he is making it grow
      Suggests that his anger never stops growing and that it is all consuming and controlling
    • And it grew both day and night
      Till it bore an apple bright
      Religious imagery and refers to Eve stealing from the Garden of Eden from the tree of life in the book Exodus
      The apple looks positive but inside it is poisonous because it grew out of anger. It is quite deceiving.
    • In the morning glad I see
      My foe outstretched beneath the tree
      He has killed his enemy which shows how evil the narrator is.
      The narrator is very villainous because he is happy and joyful to see his foe is dead.
    • So now I moan an unclean thing
      Who might have been a dove
      Dove has connotations of purity which suggests that the nobleman has ruined her by taking her virginity.
      Unclean shows that it is not right and it should not happened.
    • To lead a shameless shameful life
      Shows how society think of her as an embarrassment but she does not view herself as that.
      Oxymoron shows how confused and conflicted about the situation.
    • Your love was writ in sand
      Shows how Kate's love is just temporary and is not genuine like her.
      The metaphor suggests that the only reason Kate loves him is for the money and wealth so one day her love will fade away just like when the waves wash the things you write and build in the sand at the beach.
    • My fair-haired son, my shame, my pride

      The only thing she has over Kate is the nobleman's son.
      Suggests that while other people may find it a shame and embarrassment she finds her son as her pride and a gift from the nobleman.
    • Half a league
      To make it sound as if horses are galloping because they were on horseback which gives the reader a vivid image of what is happening.
    • Into the valley of death
      Repetition and Metaphor suggests the location of the battle.
      The soldiers are riding into their death and they can't escape their impending doom.
    • Someone had blunder'd
      Theirs not to make reply
      Theirs not to reason why
      Theirs but to do and die
      Blunder means that a mistake has been made so someone had told set them up against the Russian troops.
      The rhyme emphasizes the soldiers duty right despite being aware of the blunder.
      They can't turn away because they will be killed and if they go back then people will be ashamed of them.
    • Into the jaws of death
      Into the mouth of hell

      Personification= swallowed by the enemy and can not escape
      Makes the enemy look like monsters and the soldiers are their prey.
    • People eat sleep love normally
      while I seek out the tragic the absurd
      to make a subject
      Triplets= they do normal activities and have happiness hence the love
      People have no idea what happens behind the scenes
    • I took a pair of peach, sun-glided girls
      rolling, sill-crumpled, on the grass in champagne giggles
      High class lifestyle so happy and fun
      Champagne suggests expensive and rich
    • a small girl staggering down some devastated street

      Shes injured weak unable to walk
      Something bad has really happened as the street is war-torn
    • Instinct prevailing, she dropped her burden
      and mouth too small for her dark scream
      Makes her seem evil
      The child is her burden and it is a noun and it is what is keeping her from escaping
      Shows how loud her scream was and the person was shocked that sound came from her mouth
    • Even in hell the human spirit triumphs over all
      Even in war humans choose themselves over others but they do not have choice
    • I am born academic
      By dey got me on de run
      Assume that he is sporty because of his skin colour.
      He has no choice but to do what people tell him to do and is treated like an animal as he has no choice.
    • Yu put me in a pigeon hole
      They make him feel small and trapped.
      So he can not make decisions for himself and they make him feel like he is animal so he is inhumane.

      Hes got worry's and concerns about his future.
      Unsure on how to feel or he is careful and cautious on the way he acts

      Sum of me best friends are white.
      Mocking the white people who are racist but justify themselves by saying Oh I've got a black friends
