  Growths within the body that serve no useful purpose & are caused by errors that occur during cellular reproduction

  • cancer of brain or spinal cord
• Primary neoplasms: cancers that arise within the NS

  • usually caused by errors in mitosis within support structures of CNS such as meningioma
• Metastatic neoplasms:

  • tumors that arise elsewhere in the body, travel through bloodstream or lymphatic system & take up residence within nervous system tissues
  • Lung & breast are common types
• Assessment:

  • HA, N/V, seizures, ataxia - change in mental status & stroke-like symptoms are common in brain tumors
  • Spinal tumors: s&S are related to compression of spinal cord - back pain, loss sensation in limb, incontinence
• Management:

  • Supportive
  • Watch for states epilepticus
