falsifiability

Cards (3)

  • Theories should be open to hypothesis testing and the possibility of being proven false.
  • This is not a problem with behaviourism as it tests hypotheses and is a scientific method.
  • Freud's theory lacks falsifiability as we can't prove the existence of the unconscious but we can't prove them to be false - if people behave in the way predicted by the psychodynamic theory it is viewed as support, but if they don't it is argued that they are using defence mechanisms.
