Limitations

    Cards (4)

    • Can only detect activity in surface regions of the brain, it cannot reveal what is happening in deeper regions such as the hypothalamus or hippocampus.
    • Therefore, we don't have a complete understanding of underlying structures involved in the brain activity recorded.
    • Each electrode detects activity in many thousands of neurons, producing a generalised signal, meaning it is difficult to know the exact source of neural activity.
    • Can't distinguish the activity of different but adjacent neurons.
