  • lagos is a city in nigeria, it is the largest city in africa and nigeria has the largest GDP of any african county. it is estimated to have 14 million people and is growing at a rate of 3.2% a year

    • house construction can't keep up so up to 66% live in illegal settlements (slums)
    • often very flimsy and people can be evicted at any time to demolish slum and clean up the city

    clean water, sanitation and energy
    • water - only about 40% get clean water from water supply so people have to pay huge premiums to get water from other areas
    • sanitation - up to 15 houses share one toilet and local toilets often lead into water supply. this can create health problems such as cholera
    • energy - isn't enough electricity for the whole city, so areas take it in turn to have energy while others are cut off. some get illegal connections but these often get cut out

    • isnt enough healthcare centers for people, and many can't afford private healthcare
    • there aren't enough schools and many people can't afford to send people to school

    • 9000 tonnes of rubbish a day which goes to massive rubbish dumps such as olusosun which contain toxic waste
    • waste disposal and emissions from factories are not regulated or controlled leading to air and water pollution
    • traffic congestion leads to massive build up and due to poor public transport there is little people can do. leads to increased air pollution
  • in 2013 the makoko floating school aimed to provide education to 100 underprivileged children

  • constant migration into lagos, increasing population
  • in nigeria there are some areas with significant investment into industries such as oil drilling from shell ( 12 billion), this creates many well paying job however many of them go to workers from abroad and an increase in oil spills which are often never cleaned.
  • increase in oil spills also increases exports, bring in more gross national income with higher emissions
  • in nigeria health care has improved however 60% still live on less than £1 a day
