    • The Endocrine System: made up of many glands that secrete chemicals called hormones into the circulatory system - many hormones are proteins!
  • Functions: so many! regulates:
    • growth & development
    • reproduction
    • stress responses
    • blood sugar levels
    • calcium levels
    • blood pressure & water balance
    • Hormones travel through the bloodstream to target organs where they have receptors for the hormone
    • The hormone stimulates the organ or second gland to respond or change
  • Example of Gland and Hormone Action:
    • The pancreas (endocrine gland) secretes insulin, which stimulates body cells and the liver to take in glucose - lowering the concentration in blood
