  • Pre-linguistic stage(1st stage)

    0-6 months.
    Communicate with sounds e.g. crying.
    Infants can recognise voices + sounds.
  • Babbling stage (2nd stage)

    6-9 months
    Children begin to babble making noises but not words.
    Mouth muscles + teeth grow to prepare for more advanced talking.
  • Holophrastic stage (3rd stage)

    9-18 months
    Start to say single words that describe objects and identify basic needs.
  • Two-wors stage (4th stage)
    Child can speak 2 word sentences that usually have some meaning e.g. more food.
  • Telegraphic stage (5th stage)
    24-30 months
    Child can speak phrases but grammar isn't prevalent.
    Child can understand basic instructions.
  • Multi-word stage (6th stage)
    24-30+ months
    Able to build increasingly complex sentences that allow them to better communicate ideas.
    Able to use correct grammar e.g. dog instead of dogs.
