RNA

Cards (5)

  • RNA is a polymer. It is made from a ribose, phosphate group and a nitrogen base. It has uracil instead of thymine.
  • RNA has a function of copying and transferring genetic code. For this, there are three types of RNA: mRNA, tRNA, rRNA.
  • mRNA is messenger RNA. It is created in the nucleus, leaves the nucleus to carry a copy of then genetic code of one gene to a ribosome. It is shorter (less risk of damage by enzymes) and single stranded.
  • tRNA is transfer RNA. It is only found in the cytoplasm, single stranded, clover leaf shaped (hydrogen bonds hold shape), attach to one of the twenty amino acids and transfer the amino acid to the ribosome to create the polypeptide chain. It has three bases which are complementary to the three bases on mRNA (anticodon).
  • rRNA is ribosomal RNA. It combines with protein to make ribosomes.
