Energy transfers in and between organisms

    Cards (6)

    • Define biomass
The mass of living material in an organism
      OR
The chemical energy stored in the bonds of molecules which the organism contains
    • Describe how to calculate biomass.
By calculating the dry organic mass of material:
Measure the amount of carbon an organism contains
      Dry and weigh at intervals
Once constant all water has been removed
Carbon mass is estimated at 50% of any dry mass
    • What makes up an ecosystem.
A biological community of biotic and abiotic factors
All contain a producer and consumers
    • Define autotrophy
Organisms which produce their own food
    • Define photoautotrophy.
Terrestrial and aquatic plants which use photosythesis to produce their own food.
    • How is glucose the biomass of a plant?
Some glucose leaves by respiration in a plant, whilst the rest is incorperated into biological molecules. The biological molecules is what is the biomass.
