    • What is schizophrenia?
      A severe mental disorder, which impairs an individuals view of reality. This can have a severe effect on their ability to regulate their thoughts, emotions, language, complete everyday tasks and ability to perceive the world and themselves.
    • What are the two different forms that the symptoms of schizophrenia can be divided into?
      Positive symptoms and negative symptoms
    • Positive symptoms
      Schizophrenic symptoms such as disorganised thoughts, hallucinations, and delusions.
    • Hallucinations
      The perception of something real that does not truly exist.
    • Delusions
      Bizarre beliefs/thoughts that seem real but are not.
    • Delusions of persecution
      Paranoid thoughts such as my phone is tapped or there are hidden cameras in my home (someone out to get you).
    • Delusions of grandeur
      Feeling of power or importance such as "I am God" or Napoleon (which is quite common)
    • Delusions of the body
      Sufferers feel that themselves or part of them is under external control
    • What are the 4 types of hallucinations?
      Auditory - Hearing voices that other cannot hear Visual- Seeing lights, objects or faces that other cannot Olfactory- Smelling things that others cannot
      Tactile- They feel things that are not real (bugs crawling on skin)
    • Negative symptoms
      Symptoms of schizophrenia that are marked by deficits in functioning, such as apathy, lack of emotion, and slowed speech and movement.
    • Speech poverty
      The lessening of speech fluency and productivity, which reflects slowing or blocked thoughts.
    • Avolition
      A general loss of energy leading to the inability to engage in or complete a goal such as going to school (lack of motivation)
    • What are the three signs of avolition?
      Poor hygiene, lack of persistence and lack of energy
    • What are the two systems of classification for schizophrenia?
      DSM-5 and ICD-10
    • DSM-5
      One positive symptoms must be present for a diagnosis.
    • ICD-10
      Two negative symptoms are sufficient for a diagnosis.
