  contains dead cell or attenuated pathogens
• Why doesn't vaccines cause illnesses?

  • may contain inactivated form of pathogen, killed by heat treatment
  • may contain an attenuated form of pathogen
  • may contain isolated antigens such as cell surface membrane from pathogen
