  • (holy week) Monday 29th
On his first full day in the city, Jesus went to the Temple, where he found a busy market with traders selling animals for sacrifice at inflated prices. Jesus, enraged at the use of the Temple for money-making, the way traders were swindling worshippers, overthrew their tables, set many animals loose and drove traders out of the Temple with 'a whip of cords'.
  • (holy week) Tuesday 30th
Following the near riot he caused the previous day, Jesus returned to the Temple, where people were expecting another disturbance. Most people thought the Messiah would lead a rebellion against the Romans and thought maybe Jesus' protest in the market might have been the start of one. Instead, he simply spoke to those around about forgiveness and peace.
  • (holy week) Wednesday 31st
The Zealots (a resistance group who tried to fight the Romans) had at one time thought that Jesus might be able to aid their cause, but now they saw him as more of a danger to their campaign of violence. Jesus had on many occasions publicly criticised the Pharisees and had challenged the Sadducees’ authority in the Temple market. His enemies now tried to trick him into saying something publicly that would turn the people against him.
  • (holy week) Maundy Thursday
After a third day of preaching in the Temple, and dodging the trick questions of his enemies, Jesus held a Pesach meal with his closest disciples. He revealed that he knew one of them would betray him that night. Judas promptly left and went to tell Jesus’ enemies where they could find him. Later, after nightfall, a mob guided by Judas came to arrest Jesus while he prayed in a local public garden.
  • (holy week) Good Friday
Throughout the night, Jesus had been questioned by the authorities. He was first charged with blasphemy by the Sanhedrin, and then accused of rebellion against the Romans. Along the way, he was beaten and whipped. He was finally sentenced to death and crucified at 9am. For six hours, he hung on the cross before dying and being taken down and buried before sunset.
