Alkenes

• Alkenes contain the functional group >C=C<
• Alkenes have the general formula CnH2n
• alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons because they have at least one double bond between carbons
• Alkenes react with bromine water. UV light isn’t required. The double bind is broken and the bromine atoms are added, causing an addition reaction. the colour change is orange to colourless
• Bromine water can be used to differentiate between alkanes and alkenes because when added to an alkene the orange water goes colourless, but when added to an alkane it remains orange
