  • damages $12 billion
  • 30,000 fishing boats destroyed - $724 million in lost income
  • 4.1 million homeless
  • 1.1 million homes damaged
  • 1.1 million tonnes crops destroyed
  • 90% of the city of Tacloban was destroyed after a 5 m high storm surge
  • 400mm of rain over a few days caused widespread catastrophic flooding
  • Tacloban Airport damaged
• Secondary effects:

  • major shortages of food, water and aid supplies. This affected health and sanitation and led to outbreaks of disease
  • flooding and heavy rain caused landslides which blocked roads and slowed relief efforts
  • flights and ferry services disrupted for weeks which slowed the distribution of aid
  • 6 million lost their jobs
  • power supplies cut off for a month
  • looting and violence in Tacloban
