  • studied law at trinity college dublin
  • supported catholic emancipation (giving catholics the same freedoms that the protestants had)
  • a founding member of the society of the united irishmen-first meeting held in belfast in 1791
  • caught giving information to a spy working for the french, was allowed to emigrate to america in 1795
  • 1796 he travelled to paris to try to persuade the french government to send an invasion to ireland
  • that year he sailed with 43 ships and 15000 french soldiers but had to return because of the bad weather
  • when the british launched severe measures against the rebels, the rebellion had to take place without the french invasion
  • in 1798 tone arrived in Loch Swilly in October with 3000 French troops
  • they were defeated and tone was captured
  • at his trial he requested a soldiers death (ie. shot)
  • this was refused and he committed suicide in prison
