  • covers + lines free surfaces in body
  • no blood vessels, cell receive nutrients by diffusion from tissue fluid in the underlying connective tissue
  • most cells are smooth + have some cilia
  • closely packed together + form continuous sheets; adjacent bound together by lateral contacts, such as tight junction + desmosomes
  • have short cell cycle so divides 2 times a day to replace worn or damaged tissue
