    • She only questioned the teachings of the party when they in some way touched upon her own life. Often she was ready to accept the offical mythology, simply because the difference between truth and falsehood did not seem important to her.

    • How many others like her there may be in the younger generation... knowing nothing else, accpeting the party as something unalterable, like the sky, not rebelling against its authority but simply evading it, as a rabbit dodges a dog.

    • With what seemed like a single movement she tore off her clothes and flung them disdainfully aside... with its grace and carelessness it seemed to annihilate a whole culture, a whole system of thought, as though Big Brother and the party and the Thought Police could all be swept into nothingness.

    • Any kind of organised revolt against the party, which was bound to be a failure, struck her as stupid. The clever thing was to break the rules and stay alive all the same
