Lesson 2

Cards (26)

  • Visual media
Symbols, pictures, icons, and others that communicate with one's sense of sight
  • Types of visual media
    • Ideogram
    • Statistical Visualization
    • Picture
    • Graphic Design
    • Video
    • 3D Image
  • Ideogram
    Graphical symbols that represent ideas
  • Statistical Visualization
Study and creation of data using visual representation
  • Picture
Used widely by people to express their ideas, opinions, and sentiments
  • Graphic Design
Combination of text and pictures to communicate information
  • Video
Combination of motion and picture; or of motion, picture, and audio
  • 3D Image
    Three-dimensional visual medium
  • Purpose of visual information
    • Gain Attention
    • Create Meaning
    • Facilitate Retention
  • Visual design elements
    • Lines
    • Shapes
    • Value
    • Texture
    • Color
    • Form
  • Line
Path made by a moving point: a connected and continuous
  • Shape
Area occupying space in a composition and it can be defined by a line, color, or texture
  • Value
Degree of light and dark design. It is the contrast between black and white and all the tones in between
  • Texture
Surface feels or is perceived to feel. Texture can be added to attract or repel interest to a visual element
  • Color
Visual sensation resulting from the reflection wave lengths of light from differing sources
  • Form
Figure having volume and thickness. An illusion of three-dimensional (3D) object can be implied with the use of light and shading
  • Visual design principles
    • Consistency
    • Center of Interest
    • Balance
    • Harmony
    • Contrast
    • Directional Movement
    • Rhythm
    • Perspective
  • Consistency
Consistency in margins, typeface, and colors especially in the whole documents or presentations
  • Center of Interest
Area that first attracts attention in a composition. This area is more important when compared to the other elements
  • Balance
Feeling of visual equality in shape, forms, etc. can be used in creating balance in a composition
  • Harmony
Brings together a composition with similar units
  • Contrast
Offers some change in value creating a visual discord in a composition
  • Directional Movement
Visual flow through the composition. It can be the suggestion of motion in a design as you move from one object to another
  • Rhythm
Movement in which some elements recur regularly
  • Perspective
Created through the arrangement of objects in two-dimensional space to look like they appear in real life
  • Tips for designing visual content
    • Use no more than five colors in a single layout
    • All fonts should be legible and appropriate for the communication style
    • Present content in a way that guides readers through in a logical hierarchy
    • Keep significant negative space
    • Illustration should match tone and subject matter
    • Make sure items are appropriately sized in data visualizations so as not to skew data
    • Avoid unnecessary design, including 3D charts, ornamental illustration, or extraneous elements
