Growth and Differentiation

• Egg + Sperm = Zygote -> Embryo -> Fetus -> Baby
• Differentiation= Process of a cell becoming specialised for its job.
• Animals grow through mitosis until adulthood, occurring in the body tissues
• Animal cells cannot redifferentiate into other cells and only differentiate in the womb
• In animals, stem cells can be found in embryos and some adult tissue
• Plants grow mainly through cell elongation but also mitosis throughout their life cycle
• In plants, stem cells can be found in the meristems in the roots and shoots
• Plant stem cells can redifferentiate into any type of plant cell throughout their life cycle
• Cloning= the process of creating identical copies of an organism by transferring its genetic material to a host cell
• Why is cloning useful?
