  • What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into glucose and oxygen.
  • The glucose molecules provide organisms with:
    1. Energy: fuels for cells; cellular respiration and fermentation produce adenosine triphosphate.
    2. Fixed (organic) carbon: inorganic carbon from CO2 is incorporated into organic molecules through the process called Carbon Fixation. The carbon produced from Carbon Fixation is called fixed carbon. These organic carbon atoms are key to the construction of glucose and other organic molecules.
