  • Raster images

    Made up of a set grid of dots called pixels where each pixel is assigned a color. Resolution dependent, meaning they exist at one size.
  • Vector images
    Digital artwork in which points, lines and curves are calculated by the computer. They are essentially giant math equations. When you shrink or enlarge a vector image, your shapes get larger, but you won't lose any detail or get any pixelation.
  • JPEG/JPG
    One of the most widely used formats online. JPEG images have a sliding scale of compression that decreases file size tremendously, but increases artifacts or pixelation the more the image is compressed.
  • GIF
    Graphics Interchange Format. The only animated Photo format.
  • Bitmap
    Raster Image, Uncompressed file. Used in MS Windows OS.
  • TIFF/TIF
    Tagged Image File Format. Extremely high quality, primarily used in photography and desktop publishing. Can also be used as a "container" for JPEG images.
  • PNG
    Portable Network Graphics. Next-generation GIF. Has built-in transparency and can display higher color depths.
  • PDF
    Portable Document Format. Used to display documents and graphics correctly, no matter the device, application, operating system or web browser. Has a powerful vector graphics foundation.
  • Text files
    Contain textual data and may be saved in plain text or rich text formats.
  • DOC
    Microsoft Word File. The DOC file was designated as Microsoft Word's primary format in 1983.

    Cut out unnecessary or unwanted parts of an image

    Adjust images color composition for a better picture

    Make an image look brighter or darker

    • Free hosting site, doesn't required own account, share through unique URL, max file is 20 mb (non animated) or 200 mb (animated)
  • Google Photos
    • The most used image app/host, has a back up feature
  • Flickr
    • One of the oldest and well known image host, storage space 1 TB
  • Imageshack
    • Unlimited storage space, less than 25mb
  • DropBox

    • Free storage cloud, links for sharing, offers offline viewing, 2GB max storage, 16GB when you invite friends
  • Balance
    • The equal distribution of visual weight, determined by darkness/lightness, thickness of lines, and size. Can be symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial.
  • Movement
    • Directs a viewer's eye along a path through the artwork, and/or shows movement, action and direction
  • Unity
    • Created by using harmonious similarity of design elements in different parts of the work so that the parts relate to each other
  • Proximity
    • The process of ensuring related design elements are placed together
  • Repetition
    • The process of repeating elements throughout a design to give a unified look. Includes consistency of font, font size, patterns, and colors
  • Alignment
    • Every item should have a visual connection with something else on the page. Can be edge alignment or center alignment.
  • Contrast
    • The divergence of opposing elements (opposite colors, value light/dark, direction horizontal/vertical). Allows us to emphasize or highlight key elements.
  • White space
    The art of nothing. The portion of a page left unmarked: margins, gutters, and space between columns, lines of type, graphics, figures, or objects drawn or depicted.
