DNA Stability

Cards (2)

  • DNA is a stable molecule because the phosphodiester backbone between adjacent nucleotides protects the more chemically reactive organic bases inside the double helix.
  • DNA is also a stable molecule because hydrogen bonds link the organic base pairs together. Because there are three hydrogen bonds within each cytosine and guanine pairing, this base pair is very stable. The higher the proportion of C-G base pairs, the more stable the DNA molecule is.
