1 - Institutional Racism

Cards (9)

  • Institutional Racism
This is the prejudice against ethnic minorities within an organisation especially police or criminal justice system
  • There is a large difference between ethnic minorities and white people imprisoned, searched and sentenced in statistics
  • The Macpherson Report (1999)
Disagrees with the Scarman report that institutional racism no longer exists in Britain. It is widespread. This is not an implication that policies are racist but a collective failure to provide appropriate services to people because of skin colour, culture or origin.
  • Macpherson Report (1999)
This collective failure can be seen in the unwitting prejudice, ignorance, thoughtlessness and racial stereotyping in Britain today.
  • In 1998/99, Black people were 6x and Asians 2x likely to be stopped and searched than white people. They hide behind their badges of law enforcement leniences like 'reasonable discretion'
  • Clancy et al (2001) suggests when the report first came out ethnic discrimination had fallen but Official statistics indicate the fall was short lived
  • A black person is 5 times more likely to be pulled over than a white person.
  • Inequality of opportunity
  • Stuart Hall (1970) - Policing the Crisis
