3- Education - Institutional Racism

• • Most children who leave school at 16 have BAME backgrounds.
  • Ethnic minorities consistently have lower levels of attainment.
  • BAME are far more likely to be permanently excluded from school.
  • From 2007, Black pupils have been closing this gap but are still affected by treatment in education system.
• Focus on discrimination built into how the school operates like, insufficient provision of Asian languages or low priority of racial issues.
• Troyna and Williams (1986) see this meagre provision as racial bias built into schools.
• Hatcher (2016) found school governing bodies gave low priority to race issues and failed to deal with pupil's racist behaviour.
• Ethnocentric curriculum in British education systems is criticised for prioritising white British culture and the English language.

  History glorifies the British empire and largely ignores Asian and Black culture.

  Britain is seen as bringing civilisation to primitive people in India and Africa in history which reinforces racism in the classroom and leaves minorities feeling inferior.
