Finals - Biological Molecules (no structures)

Cards (3)

  • Synthesis and Hydrolysis applied to organic polymers
Polymer Synthesis: monomers are joined together by covalent bonding to form polymer structures.
Hydrolysis: breaks the bonds of polymers into monomers by the addition of water.
Dehydration Synthesis: monomers are built up to a polymer
  • Differentiate among monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides
    Monosaccharide: monomer of carbohydrates.
Disaccharide (double sugar): In living things, formed by 2 monosaccharides that combine in a condensation reaction
Polysaccharide: complex molecule composed of 3+ monosaccharides.
  • Differentiate among starch, cellulose, and glycogen
Starch and Glycogen: made up of šœ¶-glucose subunits
Cellulose: made up of š›ƒ-glucose subunits.
Cellulose is unbranched and a straight-chain polymer of glucose, whereas starch and glycogen are branched.
