State

Cards (6)

  • All agree:
-The state is the biggest inhibitor of human nature, as it exerts power and has artificial hierarchical structures, infringing on individual freedom, and therefore must be removed
-Stateless society should be established as being equal and free
  • Bakunin:
    -Moral obligation for revolution
-The state is the organisation that maintains Capitalism, so if Capitalism is destroyed (which is what encourages competition and inequality) then the state will disappear
-Any form of state is about a power relationship, and 'power corrupts both the governed and government'
-Direct action: no immediate single unified revolution but a series of actions, like targeted violence, mass strikes, refusal to pay taxes etc, which would eventually trigger revolution by the people as they come to realise the state's exploitation of them
  • Kropotkin:
-No reason to obey the state and may be a need for revolution, but there is no moral obligation to do so
-People are naturally cooperative not competitive, and competition and inequality only occurs when there is scarcity. The state, creation of nation states and their support of Capitalism creates scarcity. Thus, if you remove the state, you remove scarcity and human nature can develop
  • Proudhon:
-No reason to obey the state but no obligation to bring about its destruction
-State becomes unnecessary as people start to form mutualist communities gradually, and ultimately withers away
  • Stirner:
-No reason to obey the state but no obligation to bring about its destruction
-State replaced with a pursuit of liberty and social wealth
  • Goldman:
    -Moral obligation for revolution
-State replaced with a pursuit of liberty and social wealth
