  • After Franco completed his conquest of the north, it was clear that he would relaunch his assault on Madrid. The Republicans tried to divert Nationalist troops by launching an offensive in the town of Teruel
  • After the Republicans initially captured Teruel, the Nationalists counterattacked, trapping the Republican forces in the town under heavy artillery and aerial bombardment. Running out of essential supplies, the Republicans eventually abandoned the town
  • By the beginning of 1938, the majority of Spain was under Nationalist control, except for the south-east of the country and Catalonia
