  • Vomiting
    Forceful ejection of gastric contents through the mouth
  • Vomiting
    • A well-defined, complex, coordinated process that is under central nervous system control and is often accompanied by nausea and retching
    • Bilous type- implies d/o of motility of distal physical blockage
    • Nonbilous type - majority bile drains into more distal portions of intestine
  • Vomiting is usually self-limiting and requires no specific Rx
  • Causes of vomiting
    • Acute infectious diseases
    • Increased intracranial pressure (ICP)
    • Toxic ingestions
    • Food intolerances
    • Allergies
    • Mechanical obstruction of the GI tract
    • Metabolic disorders
    • Nephrologic disease and psychogenic problems
  • Complications of vomiting
    • DHN, electrolyte imbalance, malnutrition, aspiration, Mallory-Weiss syndrome
