Circulatory system

Cards (14)

  • Circulatory system

Transports blood with oxygen from the lungs to cells and blood with carbon dioxide back to the lungs, distributes nutrients from the digestive system to the cells, and removes waste products to be excreted
  • circulatory system is composed of the heart and a system of blood vessels, including arteries, veins and capillaries
  • The heart is a very strong muscle and pumps blood throughout the body. There are four chambers in the heart that receive and send blood to all parts of the body.
  • heart chambers top- atria
    heart chambers bottom- ventricles
  • Blood vessels
    Carry blood throughout the body
  • Arteries versus veins
Arteries carry blood away from heart.
Veins carry blood from the lungs of the heart.
  • Largest artery
    Aorta
  • Blood
Is transported throughout the body and contains substances that can be dissolved in plasma(carbon dioxide, nutrients, waste products and oxygen in red blood cells
  • 2 main processes of circulatory system
    1. short system that circulates blood between the lungs and heart.
    2. Longer system circulates blood from the heart throughout the body and back.
  • How does these 2 processes of the circulatory system occur
Blood is circulated from the heart to the lungs, the lungs CO2 leaves the blood and O2 enters the blood, called gases exchange, the blood is now oxygenated, the oxygenated blood returns back into the heart, in the heart oxygenated blood delivers all cells with oxygen before turning back into the heart, whilst doing this it’s collecting CO2 from the cells and now the blood is deoxygenated, the CO2 is excreted when it reaches the lungs again
  • The three health issues involving the circulatory system
High blood pressure, heart attack, stroke
  • High blood pressure
When the force which the blood pushes against the blood vessel walls are too high and caused damage to capillaries and organs
  • Heart attack
When a blood clot develops in a blood vessel that applies a heart with blood, if it’s big enough it can stop the heart from pumping which can lead to death
  • Stroke
When cells in the brain are deprived from oxygen.
This is a result of blockage in a blood vessel that leads to the brain or when a vessel ruptures
