AO1- Statistical infrequency

    Cards (6)

    • Statistical infrequency defines abnormality as behaviours that are statistically rare.
    • If we plot IQ on a normal distribution, most people will be around the average (mean) with some at either extreme (above or below).
    • Statistics are gathered that measure certain characteristics and behaviours with a view to showing how they are distributed throughout the general population.
    • What is regarded as rare depends on normal distribution. A normal distribution curve can be drawn to show what proportion of people share the behaviour in question.
    • Any individuals who fall outside the normal distributions are perceived as being abnormal.
    • Not all infrequent behaviours are considered undesirable. For example , some characteristics such as having a high IQ are statistically rare but also desirable.
