Cards (5)

  • blanche
    fanciful imagery
high-flown rhetoric, which often rings as false= purposeful to reveal her pretentions & to remind audience she used to teach english
sometimes there's a lyrical quality= emphasises the words' emotional content
  • stanley
    down-to-earth, often insulting imagery
non-standard, slangy, often carelessly slurred speech
contrast between stanley and blanche's speech signal the potential clash between them
  • stella
correct english but matter-of fact, mostly unemotional tone (= shows her upbringing mingled with stanley's influence)
however, when stella speaks of stanley she often betrays the intensity of her passion
arguably, stella's plain language, lacking in imagery, denotes a lack of imagination that enables her to believe stanley's story rather than blanche's at the end of the play
  • mitch
efforts at speaking colloquially are marred by his genteel circumlocutions, and grammatical slip-ups, e.g. "he don't look too clumsy"
he cannot follow blanches flights of fantasy, e.g. scene 6
  • stage directions
a-typical= more detailed than strictly necessary and written in a more evocative, accurate sense employing imagery to convey their meaning
unusual= adds an extra enjoyment for the reader vs the audience
